In mantra meditation the role of the master is a crucial one. Not only is he the one who will help select the mantra which is appropriate for you but he will also give you an empowerment to be able to maximize your benefit from the mantra.
In fact there are many stories in the ashrams of India about how useless it is to practice a mantra without the empowerment of a master. The most famous compares the difference between two mantra practitioners, one of whom practiced the mantra with the empowerment of a guru, while the other did not.
However, choosing the right guru remains equally if not more important than receiving the empowerment or initiation.
